On the advice of Fencing Post, I sanded the ends of the wires to remove varnish applied in the manufacturing process. That helped, but conduction was still spotty. Flaming the wire ends fixed the conduction issue, but I have heard that flaming may make the wire brittle. Anyway, they work fine now.

Some quality issues

Ordered three, one would not conduct current, but no visible defect. The white plastic contact enclosure needed a little trimming of excess plastic on the two that worked. Hope the quality improves, but I've found this problem in wires from different sources.
